We had to come up with a solution that would make the lid even stronger than it was originally, while still keeping the lid perfectly flat, so the repair will be invisible when refinished. We decided the best way to do this was to first, get the lid secured by glueing and clamping it back together, and second, countersink a series of hard rock maple inserts across the cracks for added strength. What you are looking at is the routed slot and the maple billet that is waiting to be installed.
