I wanted to put this picture on my site as an example of what can happen to your piano in extreme cases of dryness. You are looking at layers of maple that have delaminated from extreme dryness. Obviously, this pinblock is not going to hold its tune. Having your piano over a heat vent or by the fireplace will do costly damage to your instrument, and is as good as throwing your piano in the garbage. This piano will recieve a brand new set of strings, but the final bill will be about $3000. Normally these kind of repairs are only done on pianos of value.
